"Is that it?" Whether you just heard it or just thought it, the next worksheet up is the obvious fix and usually the wrong one.
A learner who's ahead doesn't need more problems. They need different ones. Speed drills build speed. What actually stretches anyone is a problem where the method isn't obvious, the first idea fails, and working out the approach is the learning. That is as true for an adult relearning algebra as it is for a nine-year-old who finished the worksheet in five minutes.
Four kinds of problem that stretch a mathematician at any age
- Counting cleverly. Ten kids each shake hands once with everyone else. How many handshakes? No formula, just the idea that every handshake has two owners.
- Number detective work. What's the last digit of 7 multiplied by itself 100 times? The pattern beats the brute force, and finding it feels like a trick.
- Shape arguments. Not "measure this angle" but "explain why every triangle's angles add to the same thing."
- Honest estimation. How many breaths will you take in your life? Real numbers, defensible reasoning, no single answer to memorize.
